The kitten lay on a stainless steel table, tiny chest heaving, but as the doctor talked, the cat’s eyes fluttered closed and his body began to jerk and quiver unpleasantly. We were quickly shooed out of the examining room and told to call the office in a few days. All day at school I could think of nothing else and begged my mother to call the veterinarian but we got no new news. There was some talk of visiting the clinic but for several days we were put off, until my mother announced that she would check on the cat that afternoon. I rushed home to hear the report, but she was still out, and I waited impatiently until almost dinnertime for her to return.
